HBCU Scholarship Guidelines

La Capitale Chapter, The Links, Incorporated HBCU scholarships were established to assist graduating seniors residing in East or West Baton Rouge and obtaining a college degree from Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical University.

Five (5) scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 each. This amount will be paid directly to The Southern University Foundation and applied to the recipients account upon registration.  One half of the allocation ($500) will be paid in the first semester and the remaining allocation ($500) will be paid in the second semester.

Recipient must contact The Southern University Department of Grants and Scholarships at 225-771-3907 upon registration each semester.

The Applicant must be a graduating high school senior residing in either East or West Baton Rouge Parish having a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The recipient of a scholarship must begin college the fall semester following the award.  The Recipient must attend Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical University. All unused funds will become a donation to The Southern University Foundation.

Application Process
The following materials must be received by the Scholarship Committee by the designated timeframe listed on the application.  Applications received after this date will not be accepted. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered. Beginning March 1, 2019 applications will also be available at www.lacapitalelinksinc.org.

The following documents should be collected and submitted at one time:

  1. A completed application form
  2. A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript
  3. A 500 word essay about your interests and hobbies, future plans and reason for applying for the scholarship
  4. Two letters of reference – one from a member of their high school/ college faculty and one from an employer or community organization in which the applicant has worked or volunteered
  5. A copy of ACT scores

Criteria to Evaluate Candidates (weighted equally):

  1. Work Ethic
  2. Financial Need
  3. Service to the community and leadership skills
  4. Teacher’s recommendations and Counselor’s Report
  5. Academic achievement based on applicant’s ACT results, GPA and teacher's recommendation.

Announcement of Award:

The award will be determined by members of the Scholarship Committee and scholarships will be awarded in April of each year.
